Sustainabilty
Eco Island is an ambitious change programme. It will turn the Isle of Wight into the ultimate Eco Island, with strong communities and the lowest carbon footprint in England by 2020.
The ambition for an Eco Island grew out of public opinion on the Island. Green issues were consistently high in residents surveys and the ISP members wanted to respond to this. The environment and its importance to the Islands way of life is the Isle of Wights major selling point it is the thing we have done best.
So the Island excels in environmental assets, but it has lagged behind the national average in social and economic wellbeing.
Creating an Eco Island is not just about cutting down on car use or recycling, although it is important, click here for the Eco Island view of what sustainability means.
Sustainability on Eco Island is about keeping local communities thriving through the encouragement of businesses and investment. The Council will be able to use its Island Plan to encourage local businesses to start up and sustain our communities. These local communities need to be healthier, more physically active, more involved in community life, with more people getting things done locally for themselves and with one another.
Eco Island is not just a document to explain our Sustainable Community Strategy to Government, it is a live and ambitious project, bringing together a long lasting commitment to a sustainable future.
