Our aim is to promote sustainable living, to move the IOW increasingly towards the Eco-Island Vision for 2020 and to provide a forum for discussion, exchange of ideas and in some cases the motivation to bring the Island Plan to fruition.
We believe that the work that we are doing here can act as a beacon of good practice to the rest of the Country & join us and help to make Eco-Island a reality.
The Eco-Island Vision was something developed in conjunction with the IOW Council that laid out a path towards sustainability for the whole Isle of Wight. It was launched in the spring of 2008 with an Eco-Island Conference where a number of eminent speakers spoke of the need for such a vision and some companies were held up as exemplars of good practice on the Island. The event was attended by over 700 people and marked a turning point in many people's view of the Islands future. The IOW Council produced an Eco-Island Strategy document and a number of new Eco initiatives which started to show the way in which the Eco-Island Vision would be delivered much of which is still available on their website.
Shortly afterwards Jim Fawcett, the Councils Director of Sustainability organised the Big Green Picnic an event which attracted over 7,000 people to see, hear, taste, smell and enjoy the best that a sustainable lifestyle can provide. Islanders from all walks of life exhibited the Green ideas and businesses including information and demonstrations of renewable energy.
We aim to continue this good work working with the Council and the Island people.
The next Big Green Picnic will be May 2011
